– The Flagstaff Fire Department and the City of Flagstaff Sustainability Division are
facilitating a pilot program to place rollout dumpsters in neighborhoods around the City to allow
residents to dispose of pine needles near their homes. The Flagstaff Fire Department recommends that
residents remove excess pine needles from their yards and areas near their homes to lower the risk of
wildfire danger.
The rollout dumpsters provided are only for the collection of pine needles and similar organic material
that could burn in a wildland fire. This program is separate from the Bulk Trash Pickup program; nonorganic items such as household goods or furniture should not be placed in the rollout dumpsters.
Dumpster locations will be monitored by City staff and Wildland Fire Management staff will be
periodically available in neighborhoods to answer questions.
The neighborhood schedule for the program is listed below. Dumpsters will be available for
approximately one week in each identified neighborhood.
• Railroad Springs: March 31 – April 7
• University Heights, Coconino Estates, Rock Ridge, Ridge Crest, Anasazi Ridge, Linwood, Cheshire:
April 25 – May 2
• Country Club, Boulder Point: May 5 – May 12
The City of Flagstaff Sustainability Division is also hosting a volunteer event on Saturday, April 5 to
remove excess pine needs and downed branches along the FUTS (Flagstaff Urban Trail System) north of
Railroad Springs Blvd. Volunteers are asked to register in advance at bit.ly/PineNeedleVolunteer
The Flagstaff Fire Department encourages residents to review its Wildland Fire Action Guide to prepare
for the coming summer months at Flagstaff.az.gov/WildfireAction.
