Coconino County Treasurer Sarah Benatar to Testify Before Congressional Subcommittee Tuesday

From Coconino County:

WHAT: Coconino County Treasurer Sarah Benatar will testify before the House
Subcommittee on Financial Institutions and Monetary Policy during a hearing entitled,
“Climate-Risk: Are Financial Regulators Politically Independent?”

The hearing will examine recent actions by federal banking regulators to incorporate
climate-related financial risks into financial institutions’ risk management frameworks
and to monitor and guide those frameworks. The hearing will also examine recent
actions by federal banking regulators to incorporate recommendations related to
climate-related financial risks of Executive Orders, the Financial Stability Oversight
Council, Executive-Branch-led working groups, and international non-governmental
organizations. Many recent climate-related financial risk actions by regulators closely
align with President Biden’s May 20, 2021, Executive Order on Climate-Related
Financial Risk (EO 14030) and, relatedly, the Financial Stability Oversight Council’s
determination of climate change as “an emerging and increasing threat to financial
stability” on October 21, 2021.

WHO: Coconino County Treasurer Sarah Benatar, serving since 2014, is the youngest
person to serve as a County Treasurer in Arizona’s history. She currently serves as the
president of both the Arizona Association of Counties and the National Association of
Hispanic County Officials. Alongside her colleagues, she has conducted numerous
efforts to combat legislation attempting to restrict local fiduciary responsibilities in the
name of anti-climate and free market rhetoric. With her experience in facilitating
influential conversations on the topic, she hopes to educate the House Financial
Services Committee on how anti-environmental, social, and governance policies will
negatively affect, not only her prudent responsibilities as an elected official, but also the
constituencies she is dedicated to servicing.

WHERE: The Hearing will take place at the Rayburn House Office Building in
Washington D.C. and will be streamed live via YouTube at this link:
