Copper Canyon Fire District Debates Contracting Fire Chief

The Copper Canyon Fire District Board will talk with the Verde Valley and Sedona Fire District about contracting one of their chiefs for a few years while they work their way out of financial deficit. The board members determined it would save money by borrowing a chief (for a budget of about $50,000 per year) from another nearby department rather than hiring a new chief or appointing an interim chief. A bond is only one of many ways that the board is looking at raising revenue and cutting costs to satisfy Yavapai County. Raising the mill rate is another option that the board has discussed to put a slight dent in the debt and deficits. Private donations or a fundraiser was another option discussed at last week’s meeting.
