ADEQ Responds to Sewage Spill in Oak Creek

Scary moments for the The City of Sedona Wednesday morning when it looked as though thousands of gallons of sewage had been spilled into Oak Creek. It turned out the direct contamination may have been prevented by debris built up from flooding in the area. The City reported 22,000 gallons of effluent spilled from the Mystic Hills Lift Station. Just east of State Route 179, the lift station is about 300 yards from the creek. The effluent spilled into a dry wash that runs downhill to the creek, which is north of the station and south of the airport. The spill was reported to the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) and the U.S. Forest Service. Working with ADEQ, staff will continue to collect water samples to be sure there is no E. coli contamination.
