Driver hits child despite bus stop sign deployed and lights flashing

A student was struck by a car Thursday after he got off the school bus and began crossing the roadway in front of the bus. Cottonwood Police say the bus driver stopped the bus so it partially blocked Aspen Street. This is done to keep motorists from turning off Aspen Street in front of the bus. While the bus had its stop sign deployed and lights flashing, a vehicle approached the intersection. The bus driver reportedly honked his horn to get the driver’s attention, but the driver of the car struck the child in the crosswalk. The boy suffered a broken leg. Officials did not release the name of the driver and say it will be up to the Yavapai County Attorney’s Office to determine if any charges will be filed.
