Verde Fire burning near Cave Creek

Tonto National Forest firefighters are working the Verde Fire near Cave Creek. The fire was ignited by lightning Saturday night. Officials say the fire has charred 700-acres and is 0% contained. Planning efforts are underway to determine where and how to safely engage the fire, because of limited road access and excessive heat warnings. A helicopter is being used to douse flames where possible, and air tankers have been ordered to keep the fire from moving any closer to communities. The area is closed to the public. Visibility may be reduced on portions on Highway-87 at night and the early morning hours.
