Campfires out and trash goes with you this holiday weekend

Although it’s been a wet May, US Forest officials remind the public to make sure their campfires are dead out before being left unattended. Last weekend, despite the rain, 20 abandoned campfires were found on the Coconino National Forest. A few of those campfires escaped their rings and burned a 10-th of an acre each. This holiday weekend calls for windy conditions, which quickly dry out the finer fuels such as grasses. Prescott National Forest reported finding 4 abandoned campfires last weekend. Campfires should be drowned and stirred with water and dirt until they’re cool to the touch. Campers are also reminded to take their trash with them; there is no trash service in the forest.
