National Weather Service to monitor flooding threats.

The National Weather Service in Flagstaff says it is monitoring the threat of another rain-on-snow flood event over northern Arizona. With the flooding earlier this month and the current heavy and melting snow pack, it is a natural concern for our area. However, officials say flooding due to heavy rain and melted snow is relatively rare, and takes specific and high-end conditions to occur. They say the flooding in 1993, 2005, and earlier this month represent high-end situations which includes a mature and saturated snowpack, warm and humid air at the surface, and significant amounts of warm rain at high elevations in a relatively short period. Officials say conditions such as these are not currently in the forecast. They do say we will continue to see conditions normally associated with runoff from a heavy snow event in the spring but significant flooding is not expected at this time.
