“Change for the Better” – City of Prescott Initiative to Help the Homeless making progress.

Last year, Prescott Mayor Greg Mengarelli and the Prescott City Council began the “Change for the Better” initiative to alleviate homelessness and panhandling in the city. Assistant to the City Manager, Tyler Goodman, says the program is making progress. Goodman says 7-collection meters have been installed downtown to accept loose change and cash, which encourage people to donate without giving money on the street. Also installed were signs and features on downtown benches and street corners to discourage panhandling in certain areas. The money raised is funding a grant process for local service providers to supply transportation and housing needs to help prevent or alleviate homelessness. Goodman says $2,700 has been raised through online donations and the donation meters. The money raised is funding a grant process for local service providers to supply transportation and housing needs to help prevent or alleviate homelessness. So far, $750 of grants has been distributed to local non-profits for these purposes. The initiative has also begun an employment program which provides opportunities for those who choose to work rather than panhandle.
