This week is National Fire prevention Week. Verde Valley Fire Interim Chief Joe Moore says smoke detectors are the first line of defense in a structure fire. Residents should be sure to check them once a month and to change the batteries twice a year. Also, now that the weather has turned colder, residents with wood stoves and fireplaces should be sure that their chimneys are properly maintained and inspected before starting their first fire.
