New rabies test developed by CDC could mean better diagnosis for treatment

A new rabies test developed at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention could mean people exposed to potentially rabid animals could forego the weeks-long regimen of shots to prevent the deadly disease. LN34, designed for use in animals, more precisely diagnoses rabies infections. The CDC says in a pilot study, the test produced no false negatives, fewer false positive, and fewer inconclusive results. They say it could allow doctors and patients to make more informed decisions about who needs treatment for rabies, which is nearly always fatal once symptoms start.
