Resident arrested in connection with the Copley Fire

An arrest was made in connection with the Copley Fire that forced the evacuation of Winona late Sunday afternoon. The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office says 54-year old Steve Carter, was burning yard debris at his home on Copley Drive when the fire grew out of control due to high winds and dry conditions. Coconino County Officials say the fire was first reported at 12:17 Sunday afternoon, and with strong winds it began to grow quickly. An estimated 75-residents in the Winona area were evacuated as a precaution and then allowed to return home. The fire charred 86-acres and burned several structures before crews were able to stop its forward progression. Winona residents were allowed to return home Sunday night. Crews remain on scene today dousing hot spots.Carter was jailed for Felony Endangerment, Misdemeanor Reckless Burning and Felony Criminal Damage.
