1/12 Several people have contacted ADOT about a scam that first showed up last year, the “Toll Road” scam. Officials say the scammer is texting people, claiming the person they’re contacting has unpaid “Toll Road” fines. Arizona has no toll roads. The bogus text message claims that if the fine isn’t paid immediately, the potential victim could face a vehicle registration suspension, driver license suspension, collection fees and or legal proceedings. ADOT says ignore and delete the message. Never give your personal or financial information.
You also can check your Motor Vehicle Division account at azmvdnow.gov to see any outstanding payments or visit an MVD office to inquire about any fees you may have. Average wait times are only 12 minutes.
If you need more information, please visit azdot.gov/scams for information in English and Spanish to help you identify these texts for the scams they are. And here’s a link to an ADOT podcast episode in which a detective with ADOT’s Fraud Hotline discusses this scam and others like it.
