The Havasupai Tribal Council has announced that Supai Falls, a popular hiking and camping destination on tribal land near the Grand Canyon, is closed to tourists through August. On July 11th, flood waters roared through the canyon, sweeping away camping gear and forcing hundreds of tourists to be evacuated by helicopter. Tribal officials had hoped to reopen the campground within a few days of the incident, but the extensive damage caused them to lengthen the closure. Officials are asking tourists with upcoming reservations to call the tribe’s tourism office to reschedule.
