The Sharlot Hall Museum is proud to announce the appointment of Stuart Rosebrook, Ph.D., as its new Executive Director. Rosebrook will begin his new position on July 1, 2024.
With an extensive background as a professional historian, writer, and editor, including his tenure at True West magazine, and significant experience in non-profit management, Rosebrook brings a wealth of expertise and vision to one of Arizona’s premiere historical institutions.
The selection of Rosebrook concludes a comprehensive search initiated in August 2023, which attracted 77 candidates from various regions across the United States. A search team led the meticulous recruitment process, constituted of trustees, staff, and volunteer organization representatives, in collaboration with the Arizona Department of Administration (ADOA), culminating in April 2024.
Rosebrook’s relationship with Sharlot Hall Museum is not new; having served on the board and as secretary, his deep commitment to the museum’s mission and community has already been felt. Beyond his board participation, Rosebrook’s active involvement in Arizona’s historical and cultural preservation is evident through his roles with Prescott’s Western Heritage Center, the Coordinating Committee for History in Arizona, Prescott Frontier Days, Arizona History Convention, Western Writers of America, Central Arizona Land Trust and Orme School.
Upon his appointment, Rosebrook expressed his dedication to upholding the legacy and forward momentum of the Museum. He remarked, “It is an honor to assume the role of Executive Director for the Sharlot Hall Museum. This institution is not just a repository of history, but a living, breathing entity that reflects and celebrates the rich tapestry of Arizona. Together with an exceptional team, I look forward to leading the museum into a new era, preserving our history, and making the museum the best it can be for Prescott, Arizona.”
Marv Kaiser, Board President of Sharlot Hall Museum, stated, “We did a thorough search for just the right candidate to take the museum well into the future, and found that perfect person right here on our very own board! Stuart will be an excellent leader for the museum. The board would like to thank Dr. Paul Fees for his interim leadership as our Director. He has truly served the museum and staff with the utmost professionalism during his time here. ”
Longtime area rancher, attorney, Vice-President of the Family Farm Alliance, and President of the Orme Ranch, Inc., Paul Orme said of Rosebrook, “Any organization would be lucky to have him, especially one with historical significance such as Sharlot Hall Museum. He knows more Arizona history than any person I know and I am a fourth-generation Arizonan.”
Another longtime Prescott resident with strong family roots in the area Rebecca Ruffner added, “Rosebrook is a consummate literary, academic, and philanthropic professional who is well-known and highly respected throughout Arizona both in publishing, media, and civic engagement. I have worked with Stuart over the years in various contexts including raising funds for the conservation of Orme Ranch, the Western Heritage Center, and the “Junior Bonner” anniversaries. He is a strong team member, a trusted colleague, and a good friend.”
Dennis Gallagher, Founder and CEO of the Western Heritage Center, added, “Stuart has served on our Foundation’s Board for more than four years now and I feel his visionary leadership is poised to guide Sharlot Hall Museum for many years to come, enriching the lives of visitors, students, historians, and the community at large.”
Rosebrook’s main objectives will include preserving the museum’s history, leading a dedicated professional staff, serving as a spokesperson, and collaborating closely with the community to enhance the museum’s stature within Prescott and beyond. His expertise and leadership come at a pivotal time as the museum approaches its centennial celebration in 2028.
