ADOT says it’s wrong way driver detection-and-warning system is doing a good job so far. The 4 million pilot program uses 90 thermal cameras to watch the off-ramps and travel lanes along 15 miles of Interstate 17 in Phoenix. When a wrong way driver is detected the system sends alerts to DPS officials and activates digital message boards in the area and illuminates wrong-way signs to attract the attention of wrong-way drivers. Officials say to date, the system has detected more than 15 vehicles entering I-17 off-ramps and frontage roads in the wrong direction. None of these vehicles has entered the I-17 mainline lanes, with the majority of drivers turning around on exit ramps.
