Old Dynamite Found in Cornville

On 10/25 at close to 8 am, a surveyor for Public Works, located what he believed to be dynamite in the side of the cliff on Cornville Road near Kymberly’s Way. Two YCSO Deputies responded and observed multiple old sticks of dynamite partially in the cliff side. AZ DPS Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) was notified and arrived from Tucson just before noon. Due to the location of the dynamite, Cornville Road was closed in both directions and the landfill on the top of the cliff was asked to cease work until the dynamite was rendered safe. Two residences that were in the blast debris field were determined to be empty, so at approximately 1:15pm, EOD successfully detonated the explosives. No damage was observed to any structures or the roadway.  Yavapai County Roads Department cleaned the debris from the roadway and Cornville Road was reopened at approximately 1:45 pm. EOD believes that dynamite was very old and possibly left from when Cornville Road was constructed.
