Yavapai County Jury Convicts Phoenix Man of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon

Yavapai County Attorney Dennis McGrane announced that on May 30, 2024, a Yavapai County jury convicted 40-year-old Scott Alen Woodruff of Phoenix, Ariz., of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon. County Attorney McGrane commended prosecutors Kristen Godbehere-Shortley and Casey Martin for their skill in preparing and presenting the case, and thanked the jurors for their careful consideration of the evidence and the judge’s instructions.

Yavapai County Attorney Dennis McGrane stated, “Road rage incidents are becoming all too common across our country. As a gun owner and a strong supporter of our Second Amendment rights, I know those rights come under attack whenever someone uses a firearm to commit a crime. I want to be clear, it is never okay to point a gun at someone to stop them from calling the police. If you do that in Yavapai County, you will go to prison.”

The guilty verdicts followed a January 23, 2023 incident where Woodruff sideswiped another vehicle on I-17, near Cordes Junction, Ariz. Both vehicles stopped and Woodruff exited his vehicle and approached the victim. Woodruff attempted to leave after the victim said he was calling the police. When the victim asked Woodruff to stay until law enforcement arrived, Woodruff drew a revolver, pointed it in the victim’s face, and threatened to kill him. Woodruff then fled the scene.

Sentencing is scheduled for July 9, 2024 at 3:30 p.m. before the Honorable Krista Carman of the Yavapai County Superior Court. Woodruff faces five to 15 years in prison.
