Jason Engel sentenced to 15 years in prison for the death of Cottonwood Police Commander Jody Makuch

The man that struck and killed Cottonwood Police Commander Jody Makuch last year, has been sentenced to 15-years in prison. The Yavapai County Attorney’s Office says 42-year old Jason Engel pleaded guilty to manslaughter and endangerment in October. Engel ran a red light at the Highway-89A/Willard Street intersection and hit Makuch who was sitting on his motorcycle. Prior to the crash, witnesses reported seeing Engel run a second red light at the Highway-89A/6-th Street intersection, endangering several other motorists on the roadway. At the scene, Engel exhibited signs and symptoms of DUI; his blood alcohol content was .109% or 25% over the legal limit.
