DPS is remembering two fallen Troopers this weekend; Paramedic Richard Stratman and pilot, Thomas McNeff. Both were killed on October 2-nd, 1983 when the helicopter they were in crashed in a flooded cotton field near Marana. The men had been rescuing people from rooftops during a flood event when the helicopter went down in the field. At the time, southern Arizona was experiencing historic thunderstorms with heavy rainfall and many areas were flooded, including the crash site. At the time it was estimated the water was between 1-and-5-feet deep when the helicopter crashed. The exact cause of the crash was never determined.
