Coconino Sheriff’s Office investigates plane crash in Tusayan

Friday morning, Coconino County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a plane crash blocking traffic on Highway-64 between Tusayan and the southern entrance to the Grand Canyon. Spokesman Jon Paxton says officers found a single engine plane upside down with 1-occupant, the pilot 24-year old Andrew Dutzy. He says Dutzy was treated on scene and then flown to FMC for treatment of neck and back injuries. Paxton says investigators learned that Dutzy was returning to the Grand Canyon Airport when he initiated a left hand turn to start his approach and the engine died. He was unable to get the engine to restart and attempted to land on Highway-64, before his right wing struck a light pole causing him to crash. No other injuries were reported. The investigation is ongoing.
