DPS remembered two fallen troopers this week that were killed by the same wanted fugitive in California. Officials say 27-year old James Keeton was shot and killed with his own weapon when he came into contact with Bertram Greenberg; Greenberg was wanted in California for the rape of a 13-year old girl. Keeton, who lost his pistol during an altercation with Greenberg, was shot after stopping Greenberg for a traffic violation on I-40, just inside the New Mexico state line. Greenberg fled the scene and was pulled over a few minutes later by Trooper Don Beckstead who likely did not know there had been a shooting. Greenberg shot the 28-year old trooper, who died two days later. After the shooting of the two troopers, Greenberg kidnapped and killed another person before New Mexico police shot and killed him. Keeton was killed on February 5, 1971 and Beckstead died on February 7-th, 1971.
