A suicidal man shot and killed himself while standing in the lobby of the Cottonwood Police Department Tuesday afternoon. Sgt Monica Kuhlt says 74-year old Lloyd Wingfield had been the subject of a welfare check. A family member contacted Cottonwood Police earlier in the day to check on Wingfield because they were concerned he was suicidal. Officers arrived at his residence but contact was not made. Officers subsequently left the residence. Later in the day Wingfield came to the Cottonwood Public Safety building where he entered the main lobby area, shot himself in the head and was later pronounced deceased at the Verde Valley Medical Center Emergency Department. Kuhlt says no one else was injured and the incident remains under investigation.
