Grand Canyon Conservancy recently received $500,000 in grant money from the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust to restore Bright Angel Trail. Officials say the trail, which hosts an average of 500 to 800 hikers each day, is deteriorating due to the effects of rain, flooding, and erosion – along with the wear and tear of hikers and mules. The funds will help maintain a three-mile section of trail from Indian Garden to Pipe Creek Rest House, which is one of the most heavily traveled areas in the inner canyon. The project will enhance hiker safety, restore the trail to its historic nature, and protect the surrounding environment from possible erosion during floods.
