Prescott Fire officials say fireplace ashes ignited a house fire early Saturday morning. Crews responded to a call of a fire on Sequoia Drive in the Prescott Heights area. Crews arrived to find an orange glow coming from the back of the house where they found a woodpile on fire. The fire had spread to a woodpile, back patio and had entered a window. Crews knocked the fire down before it could do any damage inside the home. The occupant said that she had removed the cold ashes from her fireplace the night before, put them in a paper bag, and then into a steel bucket, before taking them outside and placing the bucket in the area of the wood pile. After going to sleep, she awoke and saw lights flickering in her living room. She investigated and found the fire on her back porch. She called 911 and used a fire extinguisher to try and stop the fire. The public is reminded to keep ashes in a metal container and keep that container away from anything combustible. Damage to the home came to about $10,000.
