Flagstaff Shelter Services to provide emergency winter overflow shelter bed capacity

Flagstaff Shelter Services is starting the fifth year of their Sanctuary Overflow Program, which increases shelter capacity by 50 percent, providing an additional 3,050 beds during the 22 coldest weeks of winter. City Manager Barbara Goodrich says the Sanctuary Overflow Program has contributed to a reduction in exposure deaths during subzero winter temperatures. In 2017, Flagstaff saw zero exposure deaths among individuals experiencing homelessness, a decrease from eight in 2013. The overflow capacity opened Oct. 16th. Officials ask the community that if you see someone in need of aid due to winter exposure, assist if possible and if necessary notify the police department.
