Over the past week, more than 6000 acres were successfully treated on the Sunflower prescribed burn project located 8 miles southeast of Williams. Almost 6000 acres remain to complete the project which fire managers are confident will be finished prior to the 2019 fire season. Fire crews will soon begin working on the 7500 acre Green Base Prescribed Fire project just north of Williams. Officials say they understand public concern when smoke from certain prescribed burns effects surrounding communities. They say the strategy is to burn larger parcels which will ultimately reduce the number of days smoke will be present in the atmosphere. Burning smaller units would require more burn days which can prolong the duration of lingering smoke.
