Mingus files suit over November school consolidation vote

Last week, the Mingus Union High School District along with individual taxpayers filed a lawsuit in Yavapai County Superior Court challenging the legality of a proposed effort to consolidate the Mingus Union High School District and the Cottonwood-Oak Creek School District via a ballot question on the November 6-th General Election ballot. The lawsuit alleges that the consolidation proponents circulated petitions to place the question on the ballot without any legal authority and seeks to prohibit the Yavapai County School Superintendent and election officials from incurring any additional expenditure to place the question on the ballot. The “Committee for Better Upper Verde Valley Schools” filed the petitions in early June. Both school boards voted against consolidation following a lengthy study of the idea.
