A runaway tractor-trailer led to fatality on I-17 this afternoon just south of Camp Verde. Copper Canyon Fire and Medical Battalion Chief Steve Sarkesian says the driver of the semi lost control and he and his passenger jumped out of the truck as it was travelling at a high rate of speed. He says the semi continued northbound for approximately a quarter mile before rolling onto its passenger side about one mile from the runaway truck ramp. He says the driver was treated and flown via helicopter to a trauma center and the passenger, or co-driver, was pronounced dead on scene. He says the cause of the accident is unknown at this time. DPS is investigating. Both northbound lanes were closed for a time then only one lane fro the next several hours. Traffic was backed up for several miles.
