Monsoon season has begun and will continue through the end of September. Game and Fish officials want to make sure boaters know what to do if they get caught on the water in a storm. Before launching, check the weather forecast for the area you’re boating in; if storms are expected, it’s recommended you stay off the water. Persons 12 and under must wear a life jacket and there must be enough life jackets for all passengers…this includes a throw able floatation device. Secure gear above and below decks. If you get caught in a storm, keep everyone away from electrical and ungrounded components, and remain as low in the boat as possible. Slow down but keep enough power to maintain headway and steering. Turn on your navigation lights. Head for the nearest shore if possible and head the bow into the waves at a 45-degree angle; personal watercraft should head directly into waves.
