5/14 As of early this morning, the Greer Fire, had burned nearly 4,000-acres and was 0% contained. The blaze broke out yesterday morning in Greer and quickly spread under Red Flag conditions. The cause of the fire has not been released. Officials say several structures have been destroyed and more are in the path. Crews are working on structure protection ahead of the fire and containment where they can reach it. Air resources were grounded for much of the initial fire fight due to the winds. Greer, South Fork and residents west of Highway-261 were given the “GO” order and River Road in Eager, west to Highway-261 were put in “SET” status. A Red Cross Shelter is located at St. Johns at the County Fairgrounds and the fairgrounds is able to house small and large animals. Highway-260 is closed between mileposts 385 and 390.
