As our communities begin recovering from the recent flooding, you may hear the term damage assessment. But what does that actually mean?
A damage assessment is a process used by local, state, and federal officials to document the damage caused by the flooding. Teams may visit affected properties to observe and record damage to homes, businesses, roads, infrastructure, and other structures.
Here’s what you need to know:
• It is NOT an insurance assessment. Damage assessments do not determine how much your insurance company will pay or replace the need for an insurance adjuster.
• It does NOT determine your property’s value. The purpose is to document disaster-related damage, not evaluate the market value of your property.
• It helps determine recovery needs. The information collected helps officials understand the overall impact of the flooding and determine what resources and assistance may be needed.
• It does NOT guarantee financial assistance. Documenting damage does not automatically qualify a property owner for disaster assistance.
Damage assessments are an important part of understanding the full impact of a disaster and helping our communities move forward with recovery.
