YCSO is warning the public about three familiar scams that are circulating in the county. Spokesman Dwight D’Evelyn says the Publisher’s Clearing House scam claimed at least two victims. One man sent $3,000 to an address in Illinois after receiving a call that claimed he had won a prize. A second man sent a total of $4,000 via Western Union thinking he was paying taxes and handling charges for a $15,000 prize. D’Evelyn says paying to collect a prize is always a scam. He says the Warrant Scam failed to trick a woman in Prescott. He says the woman was contacted by someone claiming to be with the Sheriff’s Office and stated she had a warrant issued for her arrest for failing to appear for jury duty. The woman asked for something in writing and the caller hung up. D’Evelyn says the Microsoft Repair Scam recently tricked a 76-year old woman. A message saying her computer had been compromised popped up on her screen along with a phone number to call. The woman called the number and the phony technician told her to pay $250 and he could fix her computer. The suspect took the money and gained access to the victim’s personal information.
