1/7 DPS remembers Sergeant Manuel Tapia, who was shot on this date in 1991. The 41-year-old was shot by a suspected drug trafficker during a stop in Nogales. When Tapia asked the suspect to open the trunk so it could be searched, the suspect ran. Tapia chased after the suspect at which time he was shot. Tapia died the next day at Tucson Medical Center. The suspect, whose name was not available, was later shot and killed by a Nogales Police officer. Tapia was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and served with DPS for 17-years.
