The Sedona/Verde Valley area has been without a Regional Coordinator for the Arizona State Parks and Trails Site Steward Program for over a year. For a variety of bureaucratic reasons, many sites have not been monitored during that time. Since the Verde Valley Archaeology Center is the manager of five sites owned by the Archaeology Conservancy, and that part of our mission is the protection of sites, the Center has stepped up and has become the Regional Coordinator for the Program.
Sites are still be vandalized. We recently discovered a site in Cornville and a Conservancy site that had evidence of recent digging. This has dramatically shown that the site steward program is an important piece in the effort to protect our cultural heritage.
