Kitt Recital Hall Gala Opening Weekend concerts – Jan. 18-20

Enjoying and performing live music in northern Arizona is reaching a high note with the opening of the Northern Arizona University Kitt Recital Hall on the Flagstaff campus during the weekend of January 18-20, 2019.

Built with great sound in mind, a team of music-loving architects and renowned acousticians designed the 251-seat hall to be filled with an “acoustical warmth.”

“The design and its various wood surfaces move sound toward the audience from a multitude of directions,” says Todd Sullivan, director of the School of Music. “The result is enhanced warmth of musical communication between performers and audience.”

Audiences can begin enjoying the new addition to the NAU Performing and Fine Arts (Bldg. 37) complex during three diverse Gala Opening Weekend recitals in the Kitt Recital Hall that showcase the breadth of the talent within the School of Music:

    • At 6 p.m. on Friday January 18, Pianist Jeffrey Swann – the NAU President’s Distinguished Artist in Residence – presents L’invitation au voyage, a multimedia recital inspired by a poem by Charles Baudelaire and illustrated with artwork of the period.

    • At 7:30 p.m. on Saturday January 19, the NAU Faculty Chamber Players perform musical pieces that range from solo voice to contemporary groupings (including two world premieres) to a serenade-size ensemble comprised entirely of faculty and friends.

    • At 3 p.m. on Sunday January 20, an NAU Student Showcase concert highlights student talents with a variety of solo, choir, a cappella and small-ensemble performances.

“The largest user group of this space will be students,” Sullivan says. “Students are developing musicians and the Kitt Recital Hall is very conducive to learning and healthy music production.” Prior to the new recital hall, the School of Music used NAU Ashurst Hall (built in 1918) as its recital location.

Concert tickets are $22.50 adults, $15 seniors and NAU employees. Ordering fees may apply. Free for children and NAU students with ID.
