National Anti-Hunger Advocate to Visit Yavapai County to Highlight Continued Hunger Crisis

Mayor Dee Jenkins to Join Bread of Life Mission for Community Forum to Discuss Local Response to Food Insecurity

Hunger Free America CEO Joel Berg Stopping in Yavapai County as Part of 8,000-Mile Cross-Country Journey

    What:

Joel Berg, CEO of Hunger Free America, a national nonpartisan nonprofit organization, will visit Bread of Life Mission in Camp Verde on Tuesday as part of a coast-to-coast journey this summer to shine a light on the continuing national hunger crisis. Bread of Life distributes food boxes and free grocery store-style food distributions in addition to running a Kids Café as a federally-funded Summer Meals site. This Tuesday, Bread of Life Mission will hold a dinner banquet and community forum to address food insecurity at Beaver Creek Elementary School. Camp Verde Mayor Dee Jenkins will join Berg, Bread of Life Mission, and local families on Tuesday evening to discuss the local response to food insecurity in the community.

This summer, there are two AmeriCorps VISTA members serving with Bread of Life through Hunger Free America’s national service program. The VISTA members are supporting Bread of Life’s Kids Café, which provides free meals for children 18 and under on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Berg is driving 8,000 miles through more than 25 states this summer to visit food-related sites, to meet with those working on the front lines of hunger, and to advocate for long-term public policy solutions to food insecurity to mark his 20th year with Hunger Free America.

    Why:

The economic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic continues to affect low-income households that were already struggling with poverty and hunger before the health crisis. In just one week in June, more than 454,200 Arizona residents did not have enough to eat, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s Household Pulse Survey. This includes nearly 266,700 households with children.
