AIA Executive Board vote to cancel the high school winter sports season due to COVID-19

Based on recommendations from the Sports Medicine Advisory Committee or SMAC, the Arizona Interscholastic Association Executive Board voted 5-4 in favor of canceling the winter sports season during a special session on Friday. The SMAC recommended that hospital capacity be considered an important factor when considering the winter season. As of this week, 93% of all ICU beds and 92% of all inpatient beds are in use, leaving concern that an injured student may not be able to receive the care they need. Officials say the spring sports season will be dependent upon statewide metrics improving and further evaluation by the SMAC and the Executive Board.
