Don’t flush sanitary wipes

Cottonwood and Sedona are asking the public to not flush synthetic cleaning wipes down the toilet. Unlike toilet paper that breaks down very easily in the sewer system, synthetic wipes don’t breakdown and instead can get snagged in the pipes, resulting in a buildup and eventual blockage, which can lead to overflows of the sewer. Synthetic wipes that eventually do make it to the wastewater treatment plant can also lead to mechanical fouling of equipment at the plant. Flushing synthetic wipes into a septic system can also have an impact on the operation of a septic system.
