Fire place ashes cause residential fire in Prescott Valley.

Early Monday morning, Central Arizona Fire responded to a structure fire on Pine View Drive in Prescott Valley. Fire Marshal Rick Chase says crews found a wood floor smoldering from fireplace ashes and prevented the fire from spreading. Fortunately the residents were home and smelled the smoke and called 911. If you have a fireplace or wood stove make sure your flue pipe or chimney have been cleaned. Also, check the hearth and surrounding area for any defects or cracks where hot ashes can get trapped. To properly dispose of ashes put them in a metal can, soak with water, put a metal lid over it and put it outside away from structures or combustibles. Chase also says to check your smoke detectors monthly. Crews used thermal imagers to make sure that the fire had not spread underneath the flooring. Damages are estimated at $10,000
