Wildfires in Flagstaff this week show importance of being proactive

This past week, Flagstaff Fire Department’s Wildland Crews responded to two wildfires.  Spokesman Paul Summerfelt says both were the result of lightning strikes that occurred last Saturday, but remained undetected until weather cleared and this week’s warming and drying trend occurred. The first was a ½ acre fire in the Dry Lake Hills area in very steep and rough ground.  This was immediately adjacent to an area that is currently being thinned, and within an area that is slated for forest treatment next year. The second was a ¼ acre fire on City’s Open Space Observatory Mesa parcel. This fire was within an area where selective tree thinning had occurred last year. Summerfelt says both fires were within the Flagstaff Watershed Protection Project area and highlight the importance of being proactive with fire control efforts in the forest.  For more information on FWPP, visit flagstaffwatershedprotection.org
