Pregnant elk gives birth after being struck on the freeway, calf saved

Early Sunday morning, Flagstaff Fire crews responded to a report of a vehicle vs elk. Officials say the driver of an SUV had struck and killed an elk that was crossing the freeway. They say witnesses that stopped to assist found that the deceased cow elk had birthed her calf after being struck. The calf had some minor trauma but was attempting to stand on its own. Officials say the witnesses used blankets to dry the calf while awaiting the arrival of Game and Fish. The calf, since named Lucky, was transported to Bearizona in Williams and is doing well. The driver of the SUV was uninjured.
