Elderly woman seriously injured after a fall into a drainage ditch

Tuesday, Jerome Fire responded to an injured resident who had fallen to the bottom of a concrete drainage ditch. Assistant Chief Ron Chilston says an 81-year old woman was picking wildflowers for her neighbor on the ledge above he ditch and lost her balance, falling approximately 6-feet down onto the concrete surface and into the water. He says when they arrived the woman was sitting upright in the water and bleeding from a scalp wound but was alert and oriented despite the significant head trauma and other injuries. She was transferred to a Phoenix area hospital for treatment.
