Human caused fires on the Apache/Sitgreaves National Forests

Apache Sitgreaves National Forest crews made quick work of the Whiskey Fire. Officials say the fire was first spotted Monday afternoon by the Gentry Fire Tower. The fire, which charred just under 9-acres, is located about 5-miles south of Heber/Overgaard. Responding crews were able to construct line around the perimeter of the fire Monday before nightfall and then the fire was hit by cooler temperatures and light snow. Crews are now in the mop-up stage. Crews also responded to the Hilltop Fire, which burned a small area west of Heber. Officials say both fires were human caused, but remain under investigation. Officials also say they had 7 abandoned campfires this last weekend, one of which ignited a 10-th of an acre fire. Navajo and Apache Counties are currently in extreme or severe drought conditions.
